Must visit Musea in Asia

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace National Museum, Seoul, South Korea: Located within the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace, this museum houses a collection of royal treasures and artifacts that provide a glimpse into Korean history and culture.
  • Palace Museum, Beijing, China: Also known as the Forbidden City, this opulent palace complex served as the home of Chinese emperors for centuries. The Palace Museum houses a vast collection of imperial treasures, including ceramics, paintings, and bronzes.
  • The National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan: It houses one of the largest collections of Chinese artifacts and artworks in the world. With nearly 700,000 pieces in its collection, the museum offers a glimpse into the vast history and culture of China.
  • National Museum of Singapore, Singapore: The nation's oldest museum, it tells the story of Singapore and the world through its permanent exhibition "Singapore History Gallery" and various special exhibits. It is known for its blend of classical and contemporary architecture.
  • The National Gallery Singapore, Singapore: It is the largest visual arts venue in Singapore and one of the largest in the region, housing the world's leading public collection of modern Southeast Asian art,  comprising over 8,000 works from the 19th and 20th centuries in various media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and video.
  • The National Museum of Modern Art (MOMAT), Tokyo,  Japan: Boasts a collection of over 13,000 works of art, including masterpieces by Japanese and International artists like Yayoi Kusama, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh.
  • The National Museum of Western Art (NMWA), Tokyo, Japan: The museum is located in the museum and zoo complex in Ueno Park in Taitō, central Tokyo. It was established in 1959 and is based on the Matsukata Collection, which includes Impressionist paintings and Auguste Rodin sculptures.
  • The National Art Center (NACT), Tokyo, Japan: is a unique museum experience in the heart of Tokyo's Roppongi district, known for its vibrant art scene. It does not have a permanent collection of its own and thus relies on third-party exhibitions. It has been depicted in popular culture like the anime Your Name.
  • TeamLab Planets, Tokyo, Japan: This museum is designed to be a more immersive experience than it's counterpart teamLab Borderless. Visitors are encouraged to walk barefoot through the museum and interact with the artworks in a more physical way. This creates a more unconventional experience compared to other musea around the world.
  • Ghibli Museum, Mitaka, Japan: A delight for fans of Studio Ghibli, the world-renowned animation studio behind films like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. This museum features exhibits on the animation process, storyboards, and original artwork.

 

Tips and information

  • Most Musea like the Gyeongbokgung Palace National Museum in South Korea will offer free admission for persons under 18 years.
  • Always check availability of tickets in advance before visiting.
  • Free admission tickets are available for certain days or time slots, however not all musea do offer this service.
  • A Tokyo Museum Pass or Tokyo Museum Grutto Pass  might be beneficial if you're planning to visit more than several musea in Tokyo.
  • Please note that there are no tickets available at the Ghibli Museum, these can only be purchased online in advance.
